The cold front that has kept Victorians shivering this week has bought fresh snow falls to Mt Buller on cue for the opening of the snow season this long weekend.
Sub zero temperatures since the weekend have also created perfect conditions for snowmaking across the resort and the snowguns have been in constant operation since Monday, blanketing the mountain with a substantial base of up to 30cms of snow.
"Our snowmaking operations have been working around the clock to take advantage of the cold temperatures and they have made approx 18 Olympic swimming pools worth of snow so far this week, " said Laurie Blampied, General Manager of Buller Ski Lifts looking out over the snow-covered views from his office this morning.
"It's fantastic to have so much snow on the ground and a true winter atmosphere for the opening of the season. We will have our popular Bourke Street area open for skiing and snowboarding this weekend and with more snow forecast in the coming days may even have additional lifts operating."
Snowmaking operations are continuing today with temperatures keeping to a low -3 degrees and the cold front crossing the Victorian alps is expected to deliver additional fresh snow adding to the growing cover.
Grooming commencing on Bourke Street is an indication of the quantity of snow on the main Bourke Street run at Mt Buller the first grooming of the season commenced this morning, smoothing the snow and readying for skiers and snowboarders.
The official opening weekend of the snow season across Australia is often celebrated without snow. It was in 2007 that Mt Buller last saw visitors skiing on the opening long weekend so there is a real buzz of excitement around the resort as snow lovers dust off their skis for the first run of the season.
The 2010 ski season opens with celebrations across the Queen's Birthday long weekend from June 12.
